Setting up Custom Domain

Connect your own domain name to Shapeshifter to create a fully white-labeled coaching portal for your clients. A custom domain reinforces your brand and makes your coaching platform feel like a native part of your business.

Custom domains require DNS configuration with your domain registrar. You'll need access to your domain's DNS settings (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare).

Access Custom Domain Settings

Navigate to your Profile page by clicking Profile in the left sidebar. Scroll down to the Organization section where you'll find the Custom Domain field.

Enter Your Custom Domain

In the Custom Domain field, enter the domain or subdomain you want to use for your coaching portal.

Common formats:

  • coaching.yourdomain.com (recommended for most coaches)

  • portal.yourdomain.com

  • clients.yourdomain.com

  • yourdomain.com (root domain, requires additional DNS setup)

Using a subdomain (like coaching.yourdomain.com) is easier to configure and won't affect your main website.

Type your chosen domain into the Custom Domain field. Don't click Save yet — you'll need to configure DNS first.

Configure DNS Records

Before your custom domain works, you need to point it to Shapeshifter's servers by adding DNS records at your domain registrar.

What you'll need to add:

Shapeshifter will provide specific DNS records after you enter your domain. Typically this includes:

  • CNAME record — Points your subdomain to Shapeshifter's hosting

  • A record — (If using root domain) Points to Shapeshifter's IP address

  • TXT record — (Optional) Verifies domain ownership for SSL certificate

How to add DNS records:

  1. Log in to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc.)

  2. Navigate to DNS settings or DNS management for your domain

  3. Add the DNS records provided by Shapeshifter

  4. Save changes at your registrar

DNS changes can take 5 minutes to 48 hours to propagate. Most changes take effect within 1-2 hours.

Verify Domain Connection

After configuring DNS, return to Shapeshifter and click Save in the Organization section.

Shapeshifter will:

  • Verify the DNS records are correctly configured

  • Provision an SSL certificate for secure HTTPS access

  • Activate your custom domain

If verification fails, double-check:

  • DNS records match exactly what Shapeshifter provided

  • Records have fully propagated (check with nslookup or online DNS checkers)

  • There are no conflicting DNS records pointing to other services

Once verified, your clients can access their portal at your custom domain — fully branded with your colors and logo.

After your custom domain is active, update any links you've shared with clients:

  • Email signatures and templates

  • Onboarding documents

  • Website links to your coaching portal

  • Social media profiles

Existing client accounts will automatically work with the new domain — clients don't need to re-register.

Troubleshooting Custom Domains

Domain not verifying:

  • Wait 2-4 hours for DNS propagation

  • Verify DNS records exactly match Shapeshifter's instructions

  • Clear your browser cache and try accessing the domain in incognito mode

SSL certificate errors:

  • Allow up to 24 hours for SSL provisioning to complete

  • Ensure all DNS records are correctly configured

  • Contact support if errors persist after 24 hours

Subdomain vs root domain issues:

  • Subdomains (coaching.yourdomain.com) use CNAME records

  • Root domains (yourdomain.com) require A records and may need ALIAS records depending on your registrar

If you're using Cloudflare, disable "Proxied" mode (orange cloud) for your Shapeshifter DNS records — use "DNS only" (gray cloud).
